Legae, Ezrom

Legae, Ezrom (1938 – 1999)

Ezrom Legae was born in 1938, Vrededorp , Johannesburg, Gauteng. He attended School at St Cyprians and Madibane High School. Ezrom Legae, studied in the Polly Street Art Centre in 1959. He studied with Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo at the Jubilee Art Centre until 1964, then became  a assistant  to Cecil Skotnes. He received a award Oppenheimer Sculpture Price on Art S.A Today.

He became a fulltime artist in 1970, concentrating on sculpture. In 1972, he was awarded a Bursary from the Merit Grant Fund, USA. From 1972 to 1974 he was director of the African Music and Drama Association Art Project. He had a exhibition of drawing, Chicken Series, signalized a new dimension in his artistic skills. The next step forward came with his selection for the SA entry to the Valparaiso Bien of 1979.The mixed-media drawing which he prepared for that event were even more sophisticated than before, in both content and style. Ezrom Legae’s  contribution  to the SA entry won him Honorable  Mention for Graphic Art –Drawing at the Bienal.

These and related works of progressively increasing sensitivity, subtlety and skill were shown the following year on a one-man exhibition, which he called Statement for 1980. As is evident in his art, Lagae acknowledges that he was greatly influenced by both Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo. Both these teachers introduced and guided him to explore various mediums.His work include the Dying Beast Series, completed during the political transition in 1993. He lived in Soweto, Johannesburg until his death in January 1999.
