Louis Maqubela
b. 1939 in Durban, South Africa
In the late 1950s, Louis Maqhubela studied at Nakene High School in Orlando, Soweto with the benificent support of artist, Ephraim Ngatane. The matriculated young artist frequented the Polly Street Art Centre as an avid student under the expert tutelage of Sydney Kumalo and Cecil Skotnes.
Maqhubela won first prize as the First Black Painter of Distinction: Subject Matter of Black South African Township Art, National Artist of fame and promise exhibition in the Adler Fielding Gallery. He then received a bursary to Europe where he met Gerard Sekoto.
Louis Maqhubela’s work has entered the Iziko National Gallery of South Africa and Johannesburg Art Gallery collections, as well as a host of corporate and public collections throughout South Africa. In London he is represented at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and in the USA by the Smithsonian Institute‘s National Museum of African Art.
