Mahlangu, Speelman

Speelman Mahlangu was born in Germiston , in 1958. He matriculated from Katlehong High School. He was enrolled at the Kathlehong Art Centre, where he concentrated on sculpture and drawing. In 1977 Mahlangu has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout South Africa. He exhibited with other members, like Rose Shakanovsky and Stanley Nkosi.

He was awarded New Signature Award in Pretoria in 1980. At an exhibition at the University of Kwazulu Natal in 1984, he won first prize for sculpture.

Mahlangu’s paintings incorporate symbols of traditional life, murals almost as Egyptian hieroglyphics. He has long been interested in South Africa’s homecoming to the African continent, one finds oneself drawn into his timeless works, of African life and traditional rituals, African pots, human figures, symbols resulting in a penitent look at the faces of mankind.

Speelman Mahlangu exhibited extensively in South Africa and Internationally. He also took part in acclaimed group exhibitions in London, Paris, Israel and Berlin.

Speelman Mahlangu died in2004.
